  • You should always turn off lights that you don’t need. Reading? With the tube light, and the fancy light on? No. Turn off the fancy light. You do not need it.
  • Make use of natural light. Sunlight is a renewable resource, which means that it will be available to you as long as you live, each day. So use it. Instead of turning on lights in the day time, open the curtains, the windows, the door, and let the fresh air and sunlight come in.
  • Make use of task lighting. Technology has advanced so much that now we have lights for particular tasks. For example, study lights. Desks have pre-installed lights or you can buy a study light for the purpose.
  • Don’t use a desktop computer. A desktop computer needs a lot of electricity, from staying on to working on it. Rather, get a laptop. It just needs an hour of charging to run for approximately four hours. Also, it is easier to carry around.
  • Turn off lights and other appliances when not in use. If you are going out, turn off everything. Unplug electronics which are not in use right now.
  • When doing laundry, run full loads. Don’t divide the load in two or more, unless necessary (for white clothes or for those who give out color). Do all of the laundries in one go.
  • Unplug the second fridge, if you have one. Plug it only when you need it, as when you don’t need it and you keep it plugged in, it is sheer wastage of electricity.
  • Reduce heat in kitchen. Open windows and doors for it. It would help save the electricity generated by the exhaust.
  • Do not keeping opening and closing the fridge door consequently. It leads to less cooling in the fridge and more usage of electricity. Also, keep the freezer temperature a bit low.
  • Dry you laundry by hanging it over ropes in sunlight. The sunlight will stop your clothes from getting all crinkly and harsh, and it would also save the electricity of the dryer.
  • If it is cold outside, wear a sweater and socks to keep yourself warm. It is better than turning the heater on.
  • Let your hair dry naturally rather than using a blow dryer. It saves electricity, as well as keeps your hair from damaging.
  • Get appliances with more than a 3 star rating. It runs the same, but consumes less electricity.
  • Use LED lights. They last longer than CFLs, and they don’t have mercury either.
  • Wash the dishes by hand, rather than using a dishwasher. If using the dishwasher, skip the heat dry mode.
  • Use the geyser less. Make use of the normal tap water or normal drinking water. Or, if you can afford, install solar panels instead.

There are many other ways to save electricity. These were just a few to get started. Take small steps to save electricity and help save the world.
